Piano Restoration is both an art and a science. The Steinway factory approach is to replace all parts out with the exception of the case, which is then refinished. Unquestionably, this will be a quality re-build, but the cost will almost equal to the cost of a new Steinway.
In many pianos we have worked on the action parts, soundboards, or other parts  needed major upgrading or replacement, but many other parts in the piano showed little wear or only minor need of improvement, and the cost of replacing them, should not be passed on to a buyer.
Here’s something to think about? Piano Cabinet Restoration
The Piano Store.com can refinish your Steinway concert grand or baby grand so that the case looks like it travelled in a time machine, back to its original state of beauty. Refinishing is part of the process of rebuilding a piano that, for a Steinway grand, triggers an esthetic response that showcases the form of the piano as an expression of fine art.
Our technicians take a meticulous approach to the craft of piano refinishing and treat each piano as an original piece of art work. The end product is a finish on your piano that is even better or equal to when it was first produced.
When The Piano Store.com restores a piano cabinet, we remove all previous finish and stain, and sand to the core natural veneer. This creates a completely “blank palette” for restoring the cabinet.
The wonderful advantage of this “blank palette” is that we can then apply any color of stain or look our client chooses. For example, if a Steinway currently has a wood look, we can refinish it in as an ebony piano with a satin finish. Or, if a particular piano has a lighter reddish stain with an open-pore finish (some of the texture of the wood grain is still visible at the surface), we can refinish it with a darker stain and closed-pore high-gloss polish, or another type of finish of your choice.
